Empowering Independence: A service user’s journey with Maples

“we have a fantastic service to offer here at maples and it’s my job to showcase this to professionals and users”

At Maples, we are committed to helping individuals achieve independence and fulfillment. With the right support and resources, anyone can overcome challenges and work toward their goals. In this blog, a former service user shares their journey and how Maples played a role in their transformation.

Tell us about you and your journey

“When I was younger, I used to do drugs, but it fucked me up a lot and I ended up in hospital. I used to beg as well, so I’ve had quite a rough experience in life. But I’m out of all that now and I wouldn’t go back to it anymore. I got guided to Maples because the universe knew I needed them, so the universe put me in this safe place, this haven. I feel like what you believe inside of yourself will guide you to the right places, I don’t wish bad on people, I wish good all the time and I always look for the right answers and the right solutions, and because of that, I got guided to the right thing.”

What was your experience like with Maples?

“I spent a year and a half at Maples, and it was a positive turning point for me. The staff were incredibly supportive, always there to listen and encourage me.

While I was there, I created a small studio in my room to make YouTube and TikTok videos. The staff pushed me to keep going with it, even suggesting ways I could turn it into a career. Their belief in me gave me the motivation to work toward bigger goals—getting my own flat and car. Now, I’m in a good place and still focused on making and editing videos.”

How do you feel Maples does things differently?

“Maples was the first place to give me the right kind of support. My time there wasn’t just about getting help—it was about growth. I met people like Nic, who shared my interest in spirituality and helped me feel more connected to who I am. We still keep in touch.

At Maples, you’re given the space to be independent while still having support available every day. If you need help cooking, they’ll be there. If you want to go for a walk, play badminton, or hit the gym, they’ll join you. The staff even do laundry if you need it. I always felt safe, but at the same time, I was learning how to be independent. Looking back, part of me wishes I had stayed longer.”

How have you been doing since leaving Maples?

“I’m doing well, staying focused on positive things. Right now, I’m working on getting my own flat. Some people in my current place like to drink, which is fine, but I’m ready to move forward.

Living more independently has been great. I enjoy shopping for myself, staying active, and most importantly, spending more time with my kids. We talk all the time now, and that means everything to me.”
