We’re thrilled to share the highlights from our Community Event on September 20th at the Vassall Centre! Following last year’s successful Service User Conference, this gathering aimed to be even more impactful. Strengthening connections and creating a meaningful experience for all remained at the heart of our mission.

A Day of Community, Connection, and Celebration
With 58 Service Users and eight local organisations in attendance, the event was packed with valuable resources and support. A vibrant marketplace showcased a variety of community services, while interactive workshops and engaging activities provided enriching experiences. From women’s groups to nutrition talks and creative sessions, there was something for everyone.
One of the most memorable moments came from our talented Service Users. Fresh off securing a local gig at The Plough, MAM delivered an energetic set that captivated the audience. Click the image below to watch a clip of their fantastic performance!
Adding to the excitement, Props Café—a local organisation that supports young people and adults with learning disabilities—fully embraced the event. Renting a space next door placed them right in the heart of the action. Not only did they attend, but they also danced, laughed, and helped strengthen the community spirit.

Connecting with Local Organisations
Beyond performances and workshops, several local organisations offered vital resources and support throughout the day:
🌱 Well Aware – Provides information on community activities and services to improve health and well-being in Bristol and South Gloucestershire.
💼 Future Bright – Offers free career coaching to help individuals build skills and confidence.
💜SafeLink – Supports those affected by sexual abuse or assault with independent guidance.
🚭 Stop Smoking – Equipped attendees with helpful resources for those looking to quit smoking.
🏙️ Bristol City Council Community Development – Assists with community initiatives across Fishponds.
🤝 The Care Forum – Promotes equality and inclusion in health and care services while encouraging community engagement.
Also in attendance were April, a key figure in co-designing Adult Social Care at Bristol City Council, and Michelle, a local PCSO. Their insights and expertise provided attendees with valuable connections and guidance.
If you’d like to reach out to any of these organisations, just ask your manager!

A Creative Workshop and Photo Competition
Creativity played a central role in the event. Bristol-based artist Luke Palmer led an engaging workshop where each Service User coloured a square from a larger design. Once assembled, these pieces formed a stunning mural, now proudly displayed at The Laurels. Many participants are eager to visit and see their contributions, making this a lasting celebration of community creativity!
A Huge Thank You to Our Community
None of this would have been possible without the incredible effort of everyone involved. Whether assisting with setup, tidying up, or supporting Service Users, every contribution made a difference. A special thank you goes to our staff for encouraging participation, spreading the word, and ensuring transportation.
Seeing the Maples community come together in such a meaningful way was truly inspiring!
Looking Ahead to More Community Events
The day was a fantastic success, and we’re already looking forward to our next gathering. Keep an eye out for our upcoming Winter Service User Event—more details coming soon!
